Overview:Private in PublicPrivate in Public Theatre has grown out of the work of Actors Conservatory, a method acting school, founded in 1984 and operated by Elaine Aiken and Lily Lodge. Both veterans of the Actors Studio, they trained under Lee Strasberg and pass on a tradition unique in its approach to the development of the artist; the actor is trained to develop and expand his own truth on-stage, to be "private" in public. Alumni of Actors Conservatory include such varied actors as Alec Baldwin, Brooke Shields, and Lily Taylor. Private in Public was founded in 1991 and is the branch devoted to returning the services of well trained actors to the community. Material is explored and rehearsed at the Conservatory, providing playwrights and directors with the chance to develop their work, often unpublished, in a setting free of commercial pressure. These new works and other more established scenes and plays are performed in areas of need: hospitals, children's facilities, nursing homes, and public schools, exposing audiences to theater of high caliber without the usual high cost. Working with the individual institutions, Private in Public seeks to entertain, inspire, and educate audiences of all levels. Scenes and informal post performance discussions with the actors involved vary in length, depending on the needs of the individual institutions and their audiences. Previous projects developed through Private in Public include a children's play, a version of "The Shadow" expanded for terminally ill children at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and a scene from Leonard Melfi's "Lunch Time", performed by actors at various hospitals in the New York area. Private in Public absorbs the expenses for these productions through grants made possible for this program. To contribute, to Private in Public, click here, or e-mail us at conservatory@netzero.net.
